Saxony's industrial hub of Chemnitz has been named European Capital of Culture 2025, along with 38 municipalities from Central Saxony, the Erzgebirge and the Zwickau region. Chemnitz has a long tradition and has experienced many upheavals, most recently the end of the GDR and the renaming of Karl-Marx-Stadt back to Chemnitz. A pronounced go-getter mentality and the ability to constantly reinvent itself are deeply rooted in this region. The title is an invitation to all to come and discover the history of the East German region at the heart of Europe.

Under the motto “C the Unseen”, Chemnitz 2025 aims to draw attention to people, places and activities that are often overlooked. 18 January 2025 marks the start of a year of events and opportunities to get involved. There will be festivals, exhibitions, theatre, performances, sports, culinary delights, workshops and events: Key events include the “Purple Pat”', an art and sculpture trail linking Chemnitz with over 30 surrounding locations, featuring works by local and international artists. Also, not to be missed are exhibitions like "Open Process" (17 May 2025), which deals with the NSU complex in Saxony, or "Out of Order", a queer feminist exhibition on identity from September until October 2025. Various music, dance and street art festivals are also planned. Ever dreamed of walking through Chemnitz singing karaoke? Then the “C_unfolds” series of events is for you! Another highlight is a performance by rapper Sido on 10 August. Sweet lovers can indulge in the “European Chocolate Festival” from 1 to 3 August, and those interested in security issues can attend “Songs on (In)Security” from 6 to 8 June, the first security conference in the former East. Sporting culture will also be celebrated: A marathon is planned for 18 May, with more than 2,500 runners already registered.

The Capital of Culture year will give you a whole new perspective on the region. Join in and be inspired!
